Barbate is a natural and gastronomic paradise.

Barbate has paradisiacal beaches, ideal for swimming and water sports, among many other attractions.

Carmen Beach

The Carmen beach is located in the town center, flanked to the east by the river Barbate and to the west by the port.

It has a large promenade that has all kinds of services and accessibility for people with mobility difficulties, it is usual to practice windsurfing, surfing, paddle surfing, beach handball, beach volleyball and many other sports.

It is also one of the safest beaches for swimming, since at low tide we can walk more than 500 meters without being covered, making it ideal for families with children.

La Hierbabuena Beach

To the west and after the Puerto de la Albufera we find the Playa de la Hierbabuena, which stands out for its wild state and its cliffs that offer us unparalleled landscapes.

Located in the Natural Park of La Breña y Marismas del Bárbate, where hiking lovers can practice their favorite hobbies with equipped and signposted itineraries to enjoy its scenic beauty and ecological wealth, hiking, cycle tourism, horseback riding and mountain sports or or ornithology (bird watching) as the marshes of Barbarte are a must for the migration of these.

Botero Beach

Towards the east and passing the mouth of the river is the Playa del Botero, name given because in the past there was no bridge and to go to Zahara de los Atunes the only way was to cross the river by boat.

This is also a virgin beach, where you can often see cows grazing and resting on the beach.

Atlanterra and Zahara de los Atunes

Bárbate is located in a strategic point to be able to move and visit many of the towns of our province, in the districts we have many other beaches such as Zahara de los Atunes that connect with Atlanterra to the east and to the west of Caños de Meca, Zahora and El Palmar.

Cape Trafalgar

From Barbate you can visit Caños de Meca and see the famous Trafalgar Lighthouse, where one of the most famous naval battles in the history of our navy took place.

El Palomar de la Breña

Within the municipality of Barbate you can also visit remains of our history, such as the Romanesque church of San Ambrosio and “El Palomar De La Breña” which is one of the three largest pigeon lofts in Europe, with almost 400 square meters and more than 7700 nests, which served as a supply of pigeon meat, carrier pigeons and guano for the manufacture of gunpowder for ships leaving for America.

Gastronomy of Barbate

Where you can taste all kinds of fish being the most demanded the typical “Pescaito frito” and the recognized as the best tuna in the world, “El Atún Rojo de Almadraba” (an ancient fishing system that the Romans already developed to produce a sauce highly demanded in Rome among the upper class called Garum, considered as an aphrodisiac food), this product can be found cooked in hundreds of different ways, from the simplest as the grilled tuna steak through the traditional “Tuna Encebollado” to the latest trends from Japan as the Sashimi.

If you are more of a meat lover, another of the star products in Barbate is the retinto beef, thanks to its unbeatable quality, flavor and tenderness.
